Discover Il Poeta

Walking into Il Poeta, located at 98-04 Metropolitan Ave, Forest Hills, NY 11375, United States, feels like stepping into a warm, lively corner of Italy. From the moment I arrived, the aroma of freshly baked bread and simmering sauces wrapped around me, setting the stage for a meal that promised authenticity and comfort. The interior, cozy yet bustling, reflected the energy of a neighborhood favorite, with staff moving seamlessly between tables, greeting patrons by name-a small detail that immediately makes you feel at home.

The menu at Il Poeta offers a rich selection of traditional Italian dishes, each prepared with care and attention. I tried their signature pasta, which arrived perfectly al dente, tossed with a sauce that balanced fresh herbs, ripe tomatoes, and a hint of garlic. The experience reminded me of the time I visited a small trattoria in Rome, where the chef explained the importance of letting ingredients speak for themselves rather than masking them with heavy sauces. That philosophy is evident here. The pizza, thin-crusted and wood-fired, boasts toppings that are thoughtfully curated; the mozzarella is creamy, and the basil leaves, fragrant. It’s easy to see why locals rave about their dishes in reviews across multiple platforms.

Service at Il Poeta feels personal and intuitive. I noticed the staff not only anticipating needs but also sharing recommendations based on popular choices or seasonal specials. This approach mirrors studies on restaurant satisfaction, which indicate that personalized service significantly enhances customer loyalty and overall dining experience. On my visit, the server suggested a classic tiramisu, light yet rich, which rounded out the meal perfectly and showcased the restaurant’s commitment to desserts that echo traditional Italian craftsmanship.

One impressive aspect of Il Poeta is its dedication to sourcing quality ingredients. Local produce, fresh seafood, and authentic Italian imports converge on each plate, reinforcing the restaurant’s reputation as a place where quality is never compromised. Experts in culinary arts, including chefs trained at renowned institutions, emphasize that sourcing is as crucial as preparation, and Il Poeta demonstrates this principle consistently.

For those who value a balance between casual dining and authentic cuisine, the ambiance at Il Poeta hits the mark. It’s the kind of place where families, friends, and solo diners coexist comfortably, sharing meals and stories. During my visit, I observed several tables engaging in lively conversation while sampling multiple dishes-a testament to the restaurant’s ability to appeal to diverse tastes.

Even beyond the food, the location itself adds to the charm. Nestled in Forest Hills, the restaurant is easy to access and situated in a vibrant neighborhood, making it a convenient stop for locals and visitors alike. Online reviews highlight not only the menu but also the welcoming environment and consistent quality, supporting the restaurant’s strong reputation.

Over repeated visits, I’ve appreciated the subtle ways Il Poeta maintains excellence-rotating seasonal specials, attentiveness in service, and dedication to culinary authenticity. Whether it’s a quick lunch or a leisurely dinner, the restaurant offers a dining experience that feels both genuine and memorable. The combination of atmosphere, thoughtful menu selections, and quality ingredients reflects an establishment that takes pride in its craft, resonating with anyone seeking an authentic Italian meal in New York.

  • Dining at Il Poeta is never just about the food — it’s an experience that feels like coming home. As a family with deep Venetian roots, we feel incredibly lucky to have this gem right here in Forest Hills. From the moment you step in, you’re welcomed not just with warmth, but with the familiar sounds of the Venetian dialect from Chef Mario and the unmistakable aroma of true Italian cooking. It’s the only restaurant that brings my husband & me right back to our parents’ and grandparents’ kitchens — where meals were made from scratch, with love, and always shared. Chef Mario, a friend and true Venetian, has created something really special. Every dish is rooted in tradition and executed with care. Our daughter Irene loves the baccalà mantecato and the fegato alla veneziana, something she wouldn’t be able to experience elsewhere. The entire menu celebrates the lesser-known treasures of Italian cuisine, always healthy, authentic, and handmade. The ingredients are fresh, the flavors are authentic, and there’s never any rush — just like if you were at home for Sunday dinner. Our Golden Retriever Red loves coming here for alfresco dining and to try some of Chef Mario’s specialties. We come back again and again, and every time it feels like a reunion — with the food, with the culture, and with great friends. If you're looking for real Italian food, Il Poeta is the place.

  • We stopped by for lunch on Easter Day and the atmosphere was perfect for the occasion, as well as the food we shared. The staff was very friendly and accommodating even though we didn't have a reservation.

  • From the moment you step into Il Poeta, you’re transported to a world where Italian hospitality and culinary artistry reign supreme. The ambiance is warm and intimate, perfect for a romantic evening or a soulful family gathering. Chef Mario Di Chiara’s creations are nothing short of poetic — each dish is a masterpiece, blending tradition with innovation. We started with the eggplant croquettes and grilled vegetables drizzled with truffle oil — divine. The gnocchi melted in our mouths, and the seafood specials were fresh, flavorful, and beautifully plated. The wine list was thoughtfully curated, and the staff made excellent pairing suggestions. Service was impeccable: attentive, gracious, and genuinely welcoming. You can feel the love and pride in every detail, from the decor to the dessert. Il Poeta isn’t just a restaurant — it’s an experience that nourishes both body and spirit. Highly recommend for anyone seeking authentic Northern Italian cuisine with heart. Forest Hills is lucky to have this treasure!

  • Il Poeta hits a sweet spot of offering elevated Italian fare in a neighborhood setting — perfect for a date night, a dinner with friends when you want something better than casual chain fare, or for celebrating something special without going ultra‐formal. The dishes, service, and ambiance all lean toward the positive. Just be aware that if you’re after a super quiet, spacious setting, this might feel more intimate than you expect. If I were rating it, I’d give it something like 4.5 out of 5 — strong recommendation, with small caveats around space and noise.
